I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer over ten years ago, Hepatitis C not long after and later HIV positive. And for over 20 years had been an Alcoholic. I am now a recovering Alcoholic who has been sober for the last nine years.
All the staff, at each life threatening illness I experienced, in every different ward on any given day treated me with dignity respect, kindness, empathy and positivity with the challenges and treatments I went through. If it were not for them, I wouldn’t be here. Physically and mentally they pulled me through.
Looking back I am humbled by their devotion and kindnesses. Also their love, determination and sense of humour. At the time, the drs, nurses and consultants sat by my bed to speak and tell me it was going to be ok. Truly wonderful.
I still attend Mr Laing's Clinic, my HIV status not detectable and under control through medication. And I no longer have Hepatitis C through the treatment I received for this. And attending clinics to monitor liver disease. My cancer has not returned. And I attend AA meetings regularly.
Words are not enough, but from all my heart - the best wishes always to Mr Hayes and his Drs, registrars and nurses. The Drs and wonderful specialist liver nurses and receptionists at the Peter Brunt Clinic. And Dr Laing, fantastic nurses and cleaning ladies of the infection unit. Where I was overwhelmed by their love and dedication.
