"Cairnwell Mental Health Unit, Perth Royal Infirmary"

(as a service user),

I have bipolar disorder and I had an appointment at Cairnwell. I arrived in what is a depressing basement with a prison feel from the 1950's judging from the decor. There are windowless rooms and a TV with the news running constantly, very depressing!

The receptionist said I had missed an earlier apt and that someone had my appointment now. The waiting room was empty! I was then told I was put at the bottom of the waiting list. (For the third time.) I left in tears and crashed when I got home. When I phoned to say how ill I now was they were rude. The receptionists are unfriendly to me and seem to have no understanding of those who are mentally ill.

Like the decor the appointment systems is in the dark ages and if I miss a couple of appointments I am discharged from the unit! I feel I could have been suicidal and still been discharged! The GPs at my Health Centre are beyond frustrated with this awful system. I have been turned away from Cairnwell several times and this should never ever happen to people who have mental health problems. It has been a nightmare for me!
