"hand washing"

About: NHS Tayside

(as a relative),

My husband was admitted for overnight observation early November.

Our only (very)  negative observation was that although he was examined in his groin area by 3 members of nursing and/or medical staff on the evening he was admitted, none of these people was seen to wash their hands either before or after examining him.

When having bloods taken, the nurse didn't wash their hands prior to the procedure despite; 1) having wheeled the trolley to his bed; 2)closing the curtains around his bed: 3) taking out of their pocket  the ward keys for another member of staff  and 4) picking something up off the floor - just continued with the process having donned gloves.

Dear Concerned Spouse

Thank you for highlighting your observations in relation to nursing and medical staff compliance with hand washing during your husband’s stay in hospital. I am extremely sorry this did not comply with standard infection control precautions.

I would like to discuss your concerns with the clinical area and would be grateful if you could contact me to discuss this further. Please contact me on 01382 496710.

I hope your husband is recovering well after his hospital stay.

Kind regards

Jo Cowburgh

Clinical Care Group Manager for Specialist Surgery and Infection Prevention and Control
