"I think the hospital needs to be more careful"

About: Royal United Hospital / Accident and emergency Royal United Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I had a serious condition requiring urgent treatment, however my doctor found when he tried to refer me as an urgent case, the hospital said I should be treated as an outpatient. I had to then go to A and E a few days later as things had worsened, but I felt I was not taken seriously and send home with painkillers, without proper diagnostic tests or an examination being made. The discharge summary stated there were no available emergency slots available. I was lucky to survive, as the condition I had is usually fatal within 2-5 days. I waited 10 days in severe pain for my operation, which was a bigger one than I expected. (as my condition needed treatment within 24 hrs) It has made me very worried about any possible future emergency trips there. Hopefully there won't be one.

I think the hospital need to be far more precautionary about checking patients out 'just in case' it's something more serious than it first seems, also they seem happy to let patients go home reassured when in fact that should not be the case. This could be dangerous as the patient would feel as they had been told not to return until the date specified, they could deteriorate and not feel able to ask for help.

Also there seems to be a problem with communication, and retrieval of medical records. A medical report from a previous test at the hospital was not retrieved it seems until I returned ten days later, I am unsure why it was not looked at from the start as it would have been helpful in the diagnosis.
