"ED attendance"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My father attended Wishaw General hospital this week following a fall where he sustained a back injury. He was unable to get up following the fall and ambulance was called by a passer by.

The ambulance crew were fabulous, assisting my father onto a trolley and promptly giving him pain killers and gas&air while calming his worries.

We were taken to A&E at Wishaw where he seen by a doctor (Mary I think) who was really good. She was very caring and reassuring and kept calling my dad “chicken” which made him laugh and she seemed very very empathetic.

The nurses we saw were unfortunately not as caring. It seemed like they had been told to get him out the trolley and send him away so demanded that he got out of the trolley - when the doctor came back she assisted my dad back to a position where he was comfortable and more pain killers were offered.

My dad is currently in the Orthopaedic ward having been diagnosed with a small fracture and regular pain killers are helping. He is hoping to be home ASAP as he does not enjoy “prison food!!)

Thanks to the paramedics and Doctor Mary (apologies if we have the wrong name) I would appreciate if she was made aware of the comments.

Dear Deej10,

Thank you for taking the time to share your fathers experience during his visit to the Emergency Department. I was pleased to read that you found Mary Jo our Dr good and came across as empathetic.

It is disappointing that you did not find the nurses caring and this will be raised to the Senior Charge Nurse to discuss with the ED nursing team. I am really sorry that he felt that it felt like he was being rushed off of the trolley especially when he was in pain. The staff within the ED can be pressurised to create capacity for on-going emergency presentations however this is not the standards of care that we would expect for our patients and your posting will be shared with all the staff to raise awareness of the importance of your concerns that you have raised.

Once again I would offer my sincere apologies for these concerns.

I hope that your father is comfortable and that he is recovering well as well as free from pain.

Best wishes

Andy
