"Medication delays and bedside manner"

My partner has been in and out of Treliske for the last 8 weeks with a bad case of Norovirus. On the whole the staff have been lovely and the ladies that bring food and drinks really deserve a lot of recognition but it hasn't all been great and I've got to the point now where I needed to voice it.

During the last 48hrs there has been 3 mistakes made with medications which are pretty vital. On 1 occasion my partner brought it to the nurses attention that he hadn't received his tablets which he needs to take as he is post transplant, this has to be taken at 9am and 9pm every day. First off the nurse argued with him that they don't do drug rounds at 9pm so he must be wrong, then when she finally checked his chart it turns out the nurse who brought his other tablets at 6.30 had also signed off his cyclosporine but hadn't given it to him. Now this tablet is a huge horse pill size of a tablet, you can't take it by mistake but this nurse still wouldn't believe him. Eventually at 10.30 she brought him the tablet.

He has now been moved to an isolated ward and last night, again, 1 of his tablets were missed and this is a trial drug they're using to try and overcome the norovirus. Thankfully there wasn't much fuss and it was sorted within 20 mins or so.

This morning the nurse which brought in his cyclosporine only brought in a 10mg tablet when his dose has been lowered from 50mg to 40mg so he has to take 4x10mg tablets. When she came back he told her and her attitude was downright rude! That's what pushed me over the edge. With her very cocky attitude she said she would check the drug chart, as though she was convinced she was right. Lo and behold in she walks with 3 more tablets. I understand Treliske isn't a transplant hospital but I really don't think they understand how closely monitored the cyclosporine level is, if his level plummits and they think he's receiving 40mg they will increase his dosage which will send him way too high and make everything worse. I also understand that humans make mistakes but there has to be more care taken and this clearly isn't a 1 off incident and he is just 1 patient. If he wasn't so alert and careful with his medication they could be causing all sorts of problems for him when he's meant to be there to get better. And as for the attitude and being patronised, there is absolutely no excuse. When brought up to other staff the typical response is "we have a lot of agency staff in". If they can't follow simple tasks or have any bedside manner they shouldn't be there.

Thank you for taking the time to share your story on here, I am pleased that you have found the majority of the staff you and your partner have encountered to be helpful. I was, however, sorry to read about your partner not getting the drugs they needed at the correct time, having to raise this nursing staff who were argumentative and rude with a poor bedside manner. This is certainly not the standard of care and communication we would expect any of our patients to receive and I understand how this must have added to the stress and worry of being in hospital with another illness.
