"Turned away by receptionist"

About: Ambrose Avenue Group Practice

My child was ill on Tuesday with a sore throat and ear pain. In the evening they had a high temperature so on Wednesday morning I phoned Ambrose Avenue and was seen by a nurse who gave my child penicillin, she told me if my child took a turn for the worse to come back. On Thursday my childs temperature shot up to 40.3 and I was seen by the duty doctor who confirmed the nurses diagnosis and said it could take 48hours to see an improvement in my childs condition and if I was later concerned or my childs condition did not improve to come back and he would be happy to see my child. By late Friday afternoon my childs temperature reached 40.4 and at 5.00pm I phoned Ambrose Avenue to get to see the doctor I was waiting for 17 minutes and when I was first in the telephone queue the call disconnected. I knew the surgery was closing soon and didn't want to spend more time waiting on the phone so drove my child to the surgery. We got there just before 5.30pm and I explained my child had a temperature of 40.4 and the receptionist in charge made the decision to send us away as they had no more emergency appointments. I phoned 111 who told me the receptionist should not have turned my child away with an appointment that high. There are some fantastic doctors at this surgery I just wish that I could say the same of all the receptionists.

Thank you for your recent comments about the practice.

I'm sorry to hear that you felt the surgery was unable to offer you an emergency appointment at this time. I will be investigating the reasons around this situation , and looking at ways we can help ease demand and improve our services.

kind regards
