I was admitted for cardiac surgery early this year and while my whole experience was excellent, I wanted to share how superb the staff on ward L16 were. They were all immensely professional, kind and friendly and the cohesiveness of the team was brilliant. The nurses, the clinical support workers, the domestic and housekeeping staff, and the other staff who come in (phlebotomy, pharmacy, ECG, X Ray etc) all made the experience really positive and encouraging.
Also the food is really good! I couldn’t eat much and lost half a stone while I was in but it would have been a lot worse if not for the varied and accessible menu.
The cardiology and cardiac surgery teams were so patient and clear with all their explanations. I also really appreciated the care and understanding shown by the echo technicians on E floor. The staff on L16 seemed to really understand the need for darkness and quiet when we are sleeping, the importance of pain relief, and they cared about my whole experience as a patient (nausea, pain, drug side effects etc) rather than just the “big thing” that was being treated. And I really liked that the cardiologist leading the ward round / visit would usually make the effort to sit down and address me at my own level rather than from on high. Cardiac surgery is no fun but it was so much better an experience than I was expecting.
