"Service Provisions"

About: Wathwood Hospital

(as a volunteer/advocate),

Unfortunately at Wathwood they don’t have a specially trained afro-hairdresser. This problem is not unique to Wathwood. There was no afro-hairdresser at Rampton Hospital for Black patients for years.

Rampton trained their present hairdresser; however many felt that this was not good enough. Rampton said that job adverts went unanswered. Patients felt more could have been done.

At Wathwood they are currently in the process of hiring an afro-hairdresser, however there have been numerous delays at the Rampton end with paperwork according to management.

I am largely content and happy with the care I have received from Wathwood. I am confident that they can rectify this situation and give an equal service to everyone.

Thanks. This is concerning and I know that there had been a problem in Rampton Hospital. But when the issue came up when I spoke to a patient there recently he felt that it had been resolved in that hospital. I will discuss this when the General Manager and I next meet. Thank you for raising this. I recognise the importance of the issue.

I'm pleased to say that we have been able to make a change.

I spoke to Adele Fox who is our Head of Clinical Operations and she was able to let me know what happened after you shared your story.

We sent out staff on a course so they can now cut Afro hair and are doing this across Rampton Hospital.

They are also going to support Wathwood Hospital once we have enough staff in post.

I hope this won't be too long before this is rolled out at Wathwood.

Thank you again for highlighting this issue particularly around receiving an equal service.

I just wanted to give an update. we have been trying to get an afro carribean hairdresser to attend wathwood for years, however some of the personalchecks, the environment and limited number of haircuts have put people off. We are now talking to Rampton to loan one of their recently trained hairdresser. This should be happening in the next few weeks.

We do have a hairdresser attend every week however I appreciate that afro carribean hair needs certain skills to cut and style properly. We do have local hairdressers that patient can be escorted to when they have leave and we will keep looking and working closley with Rampton.

Thanks

Phil
