I arrived at 1235 with a very swollen tongue and was very wheezy - probably as a result of an insect bite/sting which I had received whilst out walking. Almost before I had been signed in at reception, I was called forward for triage, wired up and given a large dose of adrenalin, I think some steroids, and sample of blood taken. The consultant, arrived and explained what was happening and what was going to be done. The nursing staff were great - cheerful and caring. Improvement was noticed and the tongue swelling abated. The consultan explained anaphylaxis and said he would prescribe continuation steroids for a couple of days and chlorphenamine and epipen, which I should carry in case of recurrence. The use of epipen was explained in detail, including a short youtube video. My blood samples had all been normal. He also explained that it was impossible to say whether there would be recurrence or not in the future. I was told I would need to stay for 6 hours to ensure no immediate recurrence, but he said in 18 years he had only seen it happen once, which was somewhat reassuring. I spent the remainder of the time in CDU where I was treated very well and given tea and a sandwich. My wife collected me at 7.00pm and I felt completely back to normal.
Excellent service all round
"Absolutely brilliant!"
