"Nobody cares about asthmatics"

About: St George's Hospital (Tooting) / Rheumatology

This hospital is not a safe environment for me due to its failure to enforce its non-smoking policy.

I have to visit St George's frequently due to a long-term condition that requires consultations, blood tests, scans and physiotherapy.

I also have asthma that is severely exacerbated by irritants such as smoke.

Every time I visit I see several patients, and once even a police officer, smoking in the grounds near doors and open windows. People with oxygen tanks hanging around the doorways smoking while staff and security mill around turning a blind eye.

One time it was raining and SEVEN people were huddled in the entrance of the St James Wing smoking. The smoke could be smelt, and therefore inhaled, at the far end of the internal corridor, up to the doors of wards.

The area outside the Grosvenor Wing/M&S should be a pleasant area for patients to wait. Instead, it's a de facto smoking area in a supposedly smoke-free hospital. Hospital security staff walk by several people smoking next to no smoking signs and say nothing.

One time they walked through three people smoking in this area, where a pregnant woman was sitting, in order to challenge some people who were smoking pot at the front of the hospital (where they weren't bothering anyone).

I had to move from where I was sitting having some lunch because it was dangerous for my asthma, so I went to sit on one of the benches in front of the Dermatology unit. Within a minute a member of hospital staff, in uniform, came and lit up on the bench next to mine.

They've had many complaints and I can't see that anything has been done to address this.
