9 weeks ago i fell and broke my shin which needed staples to keep it in place. The staff at Crosshouse Hospital were lovely, the care and attention I was given was wonderful. When I was discharged the ambulance crew who took me home were very thoughtful and carried me into the house on a chair and I could not put any weight on my leg.
I have since received one session of physiotherapy with Christine when I was told not to weight bear at all, I could rest my toes on the floor, no more than that. I have another physiotherapy session tomorrow with Christine, she's lovely and look forward to being shown how to be able to do more.
Today I had a follow up appointment at the fracture clinic. This went very well although there was trauma getting there. The clinic staff, from the consultant to the porters, were all very helpful, as were the x-ray department. I was very well treated and looked after generally.
In order to get to the hospital I had booked an hospital transport ambulance letting them know I could not weight bear and would need a chair to be carried to the ambulance. This was particularly important as I had need given crutches and a zimmer frame but could not manage the out door steps leading to the house. When the ambulance crew arrived, without a chair, I explain I would need a chair as I could not weight bear, I could not use the crutches on the steps nor the zimmer frame. The men said they had me down as being able to walk and looked at me as if I was being weak and insisted I try the crutches. In desperation I did, when that failed with me in agony, they insisted I try the frame. I managed two steps. In the end they went back to the ambulance and returned with a chair. Why couldn't they have just done that in the first place?
I called my physiotherapist and explained what had happened as my ankle was badly swollen and painful when I got home. She was immediately concerned and told me to go straight to the hospital if the ankle becomes discoloured. My biggest concern is that the shin is damaged again and that I will need to start all over again. I have young children and it is not easy losing mobility with a young family.
