"A follow up gynaecology appointment"

About: Yeovil District Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

Following a laparoscopy in the summer I had a follow up appointment today. I was taken to the room to see the doctor. The doctor did not introduce themself which personally I feel should be the first thing every healthcare professional should do. I went with my mum just to have another person to listen to what was being said. Throughout the whole appointment the doctor didn’t look at me once, looking at my mum and referring to me as if I wasn’t in the room, which I found a little bit rude.

The doctor explained the outcomes of surgery and told me that a coil would be the best option. I was then told to get behind the curtain and get ready, not explaining what they were going to do or gaining any consent. At this point the doctor got up to leave and my mum asked whether the procedure was now and this point they said that they would get a charepone and left.

When the doctor returned they stated that this wasn’t a service offered at this clinic and I would be put on a waiting list so they clearly didn’t know what was happening within the clinic. When returning they didn’t sit down suggesting that the appointment was over. As we were leaving I was asked if I had any other complaints I wanted to discuss I explained I was still in pain when I exercise and the reply to this was ‘oh okay then’ and that was then end of the appointment.

However when we went back to reception we were greeted by a lovely friendly nurse who had a very warm, patient centred approach to care. She explained how to access the service of getting a coil fitted at my GP. She was absolutely what every nurse and doctor should be and a huge asset to Yeovil women’s hospital and the nursing profession and as a student nurse what I aspire too be one day.

I am sorry to read of your poor experience at your follow-up appointment today. If you would like to contact the Patient Experience Team on 01935 384706 or pals@ydh.nhs.uk, we will be happy to discuss your concerns in more detail.

However, I am glad that the nurse was able to assist you and I will pass on your compliments to the outpatient team in the Women's Hospital.

Kind regards

Sid Hawkins - Patient Experience Team
