"First baby"

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

Received awful care from start to finish. I went in to be induced took 4 days for them to break my waters as there was a lack of beds, once my waters had been broken was moved into a delivery room pretty quickly.

Had to wait 3 hours for an epidural as the person carrying them out was in theatre. ( I get the urgency but how can only one person working there be able to do this) took 4 attempts to administer the epidural as this person was tired from theatre.

After being in labour for majority of the day my babies heart rate started causing concern and I started to feel unwell (an infection it turns out that I had contracted there which had been passed onto my baby) was rushed to theatre for an attempted assisted delivery which failed so ended with an emergency c section.

Whilst in theatre the made the first incision in the wrong place and caught my bladder which created a larger blood loss during my csection. I also had to have tests done in the next few days to check no damage had been done to my bladder.

We had to stay in hospital for 7 days as both me and my daughter were on antibiotics and honestly not one single person showed us any compassion, kindness or empathy the whole time we was there. As first time parents I felt bullied by the nurses about breast feeding and constantly hounded and pressured to do so. I could write an essay about everyday we was in there for the week on the things that happened and how this hospital failed me and my family.

Dear Tag18,

Thank you for making the time to say what happened.

Reading your story, I am deeply disappointed and saddened by what you describe and the quality of care you appear to have received, and I sincerely apologise for apparent failings which have led to this experience for you. I would be keen to meet with you and would like to offer you an opportunity to come in and speak to the Head of Maternity Service so we can work out what went so wrong here.

This is not the quality of care I would expect us to deliver, much less receive myself, or if this were me or a member of my family, what is particularly disappointing is to read that you felt our people lacked any compassion, kindness or empathy during the time you were at the hospital. Please do get in touch, the number is 01279 82 7211, we await your call.
