"I forgot to say thank you for saving my life"

About: Breast Test Wales (wrexham) Screening Assessment Centre

(as a service user),

At a recent screening in a local care park I was very apprehensive. My first ever screening was 7 years ago  and it was very painful and the radiographer I thought then, was not very compassionate about my needs. I came out feeling tearful but worse was to come, I  was diagnosed with early onset ductal carcinoma in situ  (DCIS) and needed a full mastectomy with reconstruction and lymph node screen. Luckily I did not need any further treatment and the care I got going through the process was excellent and very compassionate however, I never forgot that first screening.

This time it was much better and kinder. The staff were compassionate, talking me through the process to help with my anxiety and making the process seem quicker and less painful. It was a relief when it was over and I left quickly but I forgot  to say thank you for saving my life all those years ago and for being more compassionate now.
