"Opau. Where is the dignity and compassion."

About: Sandwell General Hospital / Older people's healthcare

I was admitted to opau on thursday evening with abdominal pain. Uti was diagnosed. My stay lasted 4 days. The organisation on the ward was chaotic in my view with some staff unable or unwilling to explain what was happening to me. Whilst one or two of the nursing staff were patient and caring for the most part i was treated like an imbacile. When i had an embarrassing accident on the way to the toilet the night nurse treated me with annoyance and even refused to replace the bed socks i had soiled in the process. Older peoples assessment unit by its very nature will necessitate understanding of the problems encountered by older people and reacting with annoyance and short temper is totally unacceptable behavior from nursing staff. Having said that the one bright light was the nurse who discharged me. She was kind considerate efficient and patient and i am very grateful to her. If only the rest of the team were as professional.

I am very sorry to hear about your experience during your treatment at our Trust. This is not the standard of care that we expect from our team. We would like to investigate this further. Please contact Matron David Powell, via email at davidpowell2@nhs.net, who will be able to look into your care. Kind regards, Toby Lewis, Chief Executive.
