"First Class Care"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Neurosurgery (Ward 64 – 66)

(as a service user),

I was referred to the Immediate Assessment Unit at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital by my GP mid September, due to worsening leg weakness, that day I was seen by the unit's Consultant, after a very thorough examination, he felt that I needed a MRI scan that day. The MRI failed to show any abnormalities, seen later by a Neuro Registrar who also undertook a very thorough neurological examination and felt I should have a further MRI scan.

I was then sent to Ward 6a, due to a busy weekend, I wasn't rescanned until Tuesday morning. Back on the ward, a doctor gave my husband and I the shocking news, that the MRI had shown that I had a spinal tumour (likely to be benign), the news was given to us in a compassionate manner.

Later on that day, I was transferred to  Ward 64 (Neurosurgical) and met a Consultant Neurosurgeon to discuss surgery to remove the tumour and also the Consultant Anaesthetist I was very reassured by them that I would be very well cared for.

All the staff on Ward 64, truly provided patient centred care in a professional, but friendly manner, they always responded promptly if a patient should press their buzzer promptly and reassured them. The Charge Nurse was highly visible and led a great team, who genuinely loved their job. The ward was kept spotlessly clean, as the cleaner took pride in her work.

I recovered well from my operation and went home after 7 days, and I'm forever grateful to the wonderful care, that I received from all the staff.

The NHS is indeed a National Treasure
