"Care at home after surgery."

About: North Ayrshire Health & Social Care Partnership / Community Nursing University Hospital Ayr / Urology

(as the patient),

After having a kidney removed due to cancer, things seemed OK to me for the first couple of weeks until I had the catheter removed.   Withing days, the main surgery wound started leaking to the extent my partner thought I had wet the bed!   Contacted District Nurses to explain what was happening and a very helpful and friendly nurse came to visit me.

I had somehow got an infection in my wounds and needed anti-biotics as well as daily dressing changes.   This continued for weeks and included the use of vacuum dressings fitted with small pumps which developed a negative pressure in the dressing to draw fluids from the wound.   As time went on, the nurses didn't need to visit every day but the care and dedication continued for almost 10 weeks.   Without the attention of the local District Nurse team and especially to nurse Lauren, they managed to care for me at home and not be re-admitted to hospital.   After some bad experiences in hospital, the care provided by the local nurses has restored my faith in NHS care, Lauren & her colleagues are brilliant.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear LookSkyWalker,

What a time of it you have had. This must have been a real challenge for you, Lauren and the District Nursing team but very satisfying that it was possible to keep you at home to recover from this.

I will make sure this is shared with Lauren and the wider team.

Thank you for taking time to share this, I am sure it will delight Lauren to read your lovely post.

Best wishes,

Eunice
