My surgeon was fantastic, he treats you as a person not a number, he is totally dedicated.
The staff in ICU are fantastic helping you recover at a difficult time, nothing was to much trouble and all done with a smile.
The care on ward 4 has much to be desired, the wards look like they need a good clean, bits of medical rubbish on the floors everywhere, easily tripped over.
The staff that smile and are pleasant could be counted on one hand, I have never encountered a more miserable group of nurses.
When asked for items such as pain relief or help to the toilet, they would go away and forget to come back, so you had to wait ask again. There was no hot water in the bathroom which was reported many times, how can they control infection with no hot water to wash with.
They run an enhanced recovery programme on this ward where you have to sit out of bed for approx 6 to 8 hours a day, this doesnt have to be all at once, there are 24 hours in a day.
I understand the concept of this program i.e.chest infections, bed sores, pneumonia, DVT etc, (you can still get DVT sat in one position in a chair for long periods) there where patients 80 years plus slumped in chairs asleep bent in half for upto 10 hours, the beds where raised up high so you could not get on them. The wards are very cold and people where bringing blankets in.
You where bullied to sit out for long periods and snide remarks where made if you where seen on your bed. I feel the program should be tweekd for each patients requirements and
allowances made for what surgery they have had, and age taken into account.
The ward looks as if it needs a really good deep clean, and paper curtains which are changed often should replace the old dirty stained cotton curtains.
I do hope, I do not need to go into this ward again.
