"Fracture requiring surgery"

About: Royal Berkshire Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

My daughter seen in A&E on Monday evening and has two fractures in ankle requiring surgery. A&E staff all excellent but no bed available so sent home overnight and told to come back 7.30 next morning to be put on waiting list. Op not able to go ahead as complications with one of the previous cases.

Told a consultant would see her before going home again -to prescribe painkillers and check cast - long wait (from 4 o'clock till 9.00) - apparently consultant had gone home without seeing daughter on ASDU which meant nurses had to stay beyond end of shift.

Have to repeat tomorrow and still no guarantee op will go ahead

We are sorry that your daughter has had to wait for her surgery. We will often ask our patients with lower limb fractures to wait at home for their surgery, but only if there is no risk to those patients. Home is a calmer and more comfortable environment for patients to wait, under these circumstances and also reduces the risk of hospital acquired complications.

However we do understand that this can be worrying for some people but our team should have explained this to you before you left the emergency department (A&E). We have had a very busy week, with some patients requiring complex surgery. This has increased our waiting times and has meant that your daughter was cancelled until the following day. We are so sorry that the surgeon did not come to speak to you and your daughter and that you had to wait around for such a long time after the decision to cancel had been made. This is not the way we expect our patients to be cared for so we will raise this with the team to prevent such incidents happening in the future.

We are working very hard to get through an extremely busy few days and we are sorry that this has had such a negative impact on your daughter. Matron would be happy to discuss this in person with you and your daughter so please do ask the nursing team to contact her if you would like to discuss in further detail.
