"Hygiene and Communication"

About: Chard Hospital

(as a service user),

I attended Physiotherapy today where I met a friendly physiotherapist who made some helpful observations during the appointment.

I do have a couple of observations however:-

I was asked to lie on the examination bed which had a pillow on it.  There was a paper on the bed but none on the pillow. This to me is unhygienic as I could have picked up something left by the previous person or could have left something for the next.

When the physiotherapist was manipulating my foot i still was wearing my sandal.  The physio was not wearing gloves and manipulated my foot holding onto my sandal.

This is not at all hygienic.

During my appointment I mentioned that I attend a "Click into Activity" course for exercise which my GP referred me to.  The physiotherapist had not heard of the course which I feel is a missed opportunity for other people who could be advised on the course during an appointment.  The course is run by South Somerset Community Health and leisure, Sport England and Bristol University.

Hi orangezh79,

Thank you for your comments following your appointment with the Physiotherapist. These are all really helpful observations and I will pass this on to the Service Manager. When I hear back from her, I will pop another message on for you.

Very best wishes,

Jenny

Hello orangezh79,

Thanks so much for taking the time to let us know about your recent appointment - I am really pleased to hear that the physiotherapist you met was friendly and was able to offer you some help and support.

We are also very grateful for the information you provided on the click into activity course - what a fantastic resource this sounds and we will certainly be exploring this further as we didn't know about this and as you say, we want to be able to share the resources and support which are available in the community so thank you for letting us know.

I have spoken to the service manager for our Physiotherapy Service about your concerns regarding hygiene and she wanted me to reassure you that all of our pillows on our treatment couches are plastic covered which means that they are wiped down before and after each appointment. We use these pillows now as pillowcases do not offer us the best option for infection control. We also don't tend to wear gloves within the Physiotherapy service as we follow our hand hygiene protocols and every physiotherapist is required to wash their hands before and after each appointment and also sometimes during the appointment. We are going to explore further why your sandal wasn't removed as there may have been a reason for this but we would need a little bit more information from you to enable us to do that - if you would like us to look at this a bit further then please do call our PALS team on 01278 432022 and if you let them have your name and date of birth so that we can look into your appointment.

Thank you again for your really helpful comments - we really do appreciate you taking the time to tell us.

Best wishes,

Emma
