I was diagnosed with type 1 over 30 years ago and originally my hypo symptoms were the usual classic sweating, etc, but recently I stopped having any hypo symptoms which was a huge worry and resulted in me deliberately living with high blood sugar levels rather than risk a hypo. This was okay during the day when I was awake but caused me real worry when it came time to sleep. I live alone and the thought of a hypo coming on while I was sleeping was always with me (I have already been admitted to the Crosshouse ICU unit with a hypo which hit me suddenly when I was out walking with friends who contacted the ambulance service.
It was through the Crosshouse diabetic unit (wonderful service) that I came into contact with Pam in Dietetics who discussed my situation with me in great detail and then told me about a new kind of sensor which you wear constantly and which gives a blood sugar reading by scanning the sensor - so there is no limit to the number of scans and no sore fingers either. This sounded perfect for me and Pam promised that she would speak to my hospital consultant to try and get me on the program. Pam was as good as her word and phoned to tell me the doctor had agreed that I would be put on the list.
So here I am with a unit that I can check anytime to see my sugar levels and it also picks up much more diagnostic information which Pam has helped me understand.
Right now I am happier than I have been in a long time. My diabetes is coming back under control and things are looking really promising!
