About: Borders General Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

On Saturday I had to go to hospital as my waters had gone. When I got there it became a difficult situation and as my little boy had the cord around his neck and it was decided that I needed an emergency c section. The midwife Joan that was on shift that night was truely fantastic from the minute she started helping me. I suffer with really bad anxiety and having someone like Joan there by my side made a difficult situation 100x better, she was able to keep me calm help me through my contractions explain to me everything that was going on and just help me to settle while having the procedure but her kindness never stopped there once I was in ward 17 she was on for the two night I was in and she is truely incredible. Anything you need you can ask her or if your unsure about anything she will give you the best advice possible. My little boy had a stressful night on the second night and Joan could see that I was getting stressed and upset and feeling like I had become a bad mum, Joan was there to offer me support and took my little boy so I could get some rest and my little boy was just so settled when he was around Joan. True inspiration and amazing woman.

Thank you for everything Joan you made a horrible situation 100x better and my babies will be forever grateful to you

Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. Congratulations on the birth of your son. Having a baby can be a stressfull time especially when your son required to be born by an emergency caesarean section. Staff try their best to provide women and their support partners with the right information at the right time and it certainly sounds like Joan was able to do this for you.

It is wonderful that Joan was on shift for the next two nights and that she could provide the continuity of care to you and your son. Having the same person caring for you does help reduce anxiety. I shall share your lovely comments with Joan who will be delighted to hear that you felt well supported.

Best wishes at home with your family

Shona
