"Low self esteem, anxiety and depression"

About: Ealing IAPT

(as a service user),

I have been experiencing low self esteem, depression and anxiety since being a teenager. I am now 26. I had been seeing a therapist for talking therapy for four years before reaching out to IAPT. The talking therapy certainly helped me work through a lot of the issues that were bothering me but IAPT sessions are where are I learnt practical skills about how to accept and deal with my anxiety and low self esteem in a healthy way. In turn this helped with my depression as well.

I have been taking Citalopram 20mg for 2 years and overlapped with therapy only for around 6 months.  While the medication on its own did help, i found the combination of the two to be the most effective.
I used to miss days from work because I could not get out of bed. The emotional pain I was feeling was fueled by unhealthy thinking patterns and all of this seeped into the rest of my days in the form of anxiety and generally making decisions in my life based on the idea that I was not worth anything and that I will never be good enough to deserve to live.
While some of these thoughts and feelings still creep in sometimes, they are no where near as disruptive and debilitating as before. One of the most helpful things my IAPT therapist taught me was how to use my behaviour and ability to move and take action to create healthy habits that would take me out of the damaging thinking loops and in turn make me feel better too.

I thoroughly recommend this service. It is worth the wait.

Hello AliM

On behalf of all the team at Ealing IAPT, thank you for taking the time to share your story on Care Opinion.

We are pleased to read how our service has helped you learn practical ways of managing your anxiety and low self esteem. We know for many people a combination of both medication and talking therapy can be a very effective way of improving symptoms.

We would encourage any readers who experience similar difficulties, to take the first step and speak with their GP for further advice and treatment options.

Once again, thank you for commenting on Care Opinion. We wish you all the very best for the future.

Thank you, Karen. Yes, that is a very good point. The first step if you are experiencing similar difficulties is to speak to your GP.

On that note, I have to mention that many of the GPs I saw were very unhelpful on matters of mental health. And in low moments when you already feel like nothing is changing, seeing a doctor who is dismissive or not properly informed about mental health, can deal a great blow and make it seem like no there really is no hope. It is only in the past year that I moved GP and had a doctor who was considerate and informed and took me seriously.

And so my advice is, that if you don't think that you are being taken seriously and receiving the support you need, do not give up seeking help! Ask to see another doctor or change surgeries, just keep seeking help because it is out there and you will find it.
