When my wife became unwell over a year ago, I had no idea what was to come. After going down to A & E for what we thought was a routine check. She went from a normal person to someone who was not conscious and thrashing about like a scene from the Exorcist. And after a couple of days she got worse and appeared to go into some kind of coma. She was rushed into ICU and i feared the worst. Life support machines kept her alive and I struggled to take it all in. We have no family around us and if it wasn't for the support i received from the ICU staff, i don't know how i would have coped. My wife remained unconscious for over 4 weeks and the doctors did not know during this time what was actually wrong with her. I couldn't eat, sleep or go to work. My wife was in hospital over 2 months and we received various different opinions of what had caused her to become so unwell. Eventually i was told that sepsis caused all the various conditions i witnessed, lack of breathing, brain not working properly, delirium etc. It was a very scary time.
My wife's care was a bit of a roller coaster ride, starting off poor, then brilliant and then poor again. We also received aftercare when my wife was well enough to come home, Inspire was a scheme set up to discuss the treatment received and regular checks to monitor her progress. This was first class , i hope this scheme becomes something the NHS can make available to everyone. When something like this happens to you, it can turn your life upside down overnight, thank you to all the hard working staff who gave so much time and patience when dealing with my wife's care.Reception
