"Standard of Care at The Beatson, Glasgow"

About: Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service

(as the patient),

I was referred to the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre in Glasgow to undergo Plasma Exchange at the Clinical Apheresis Unit. The care and professionalism I saw and received from all the staff in the unit was second to none, and after my experience I defy anybody to say anything negative about these brilliant people.

My only concern was, after chatting to staff for most of the afternoon, finding out that not all of them are on permanent contracts with the NHS. I can hardly believe that a group of people who have proven that they go beyond the call of duty in every respect of looking after patients, are not equally looked after by their employer.

I have several more sessions of therapy ahead of me and feel confident in the knowledge that I am in the hands of the best people possible. Please pass on my sincere gratitude to the people concerned.

Many thanks.

Thank you for your kind message about the care you have received from the staff involved in your treatment at the Clinical Apheresis Unit, West of Scotland Beatson Centre. It was very pleasing to read that you have received such excellent attention from the staff and that that has helped you feel confident about your care.

I have passed your message on to those responsible for the services you have mentioned in order that they can bring your comments to the attention of the the staff who are involved in your care. Can I just add for clarification that all NHS staff in this facility are indeed on a permanent contract - one member of staff was on a fixed term contact but this has been confirmed recently to be a permanent contract.

Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to write to Patient Opinion with your most positive and appreciative comments.

Very best wishes for now and for your future care,

regards,

John

Dear Gordy,

We are delighted that you found the care delivered in our unit to be of a high standard and we thank for your kind words which we will pass on to the all the staff in the unit. We constantly look for ways to improve our service so any feedback is valuable. The situation with the employment of nursing staff is currently under review and like other areas of the NHS we need to ensure that workforce and workload are finely balanced. I can assure you that we value the professionalism of the nursing staff and recognise their dedication to patient care. We wish you well with the rest of your treatments and welcome any other comments about our service.
