"reassuring well trained staff on a very busy unit"

About: Fairfield General Hospital

What I liked

my mother was admitted to ward 7 on 16 1 12 for an overnight stay and arrived to what is a very busy unit. we were welcomed straight away shown to my mums bed and my mum offered drinks and food. as someone working in the nhs i know that assessment units are extremely busy, yet we were admitted and informed of what would happen. my mum arrived just before hand over to night shift and on their arrival, the day nurse gave a good hand over to the night nurse. as my mum has dementia - only mild i explained how this affected her and both myself and my mum were reassured that help would be on hand. when i asked how long it would be before a doctor saw her, the nurse went to check. as there were 6 patients before my mum i felt happy to leave her and was told they would ring me if there were problems. when i rang the ward the following morning at 7 am i was told my mum could go home and i could come for her. i was also pleased that my mum had a good night and felt the staff were helpful and understanding. discharge instructions were given which were easy for my mum to understand and a visit from the pharmacist ensured medication was ok. i feel that although my mum needed little nursing care she felt comfortable and said she did not feel anxious at any time during her stay and staff were on hand when needed. the ward manager should be pleased that her staff both day and night are well trained professional and care for their patients. our thanks to them all
