"Good Nursing Staff"

About: Western General Hospital / Medical Assessment Unit

(as a service user),

My GP had sent me to the Acute Receiving Unit/MAU yesterday due to having pain and I'd been vomiting and feeling nauseous for four days. I was seen by a nurse quite quickly who done bloods, put a cannula in and done my obs. I think the nurses name was Gill, she was a pro at getting blood and putting a cannula in first try and she done it and it wasn't even painful. I was then seen by the doctor I felt he listened but didn't really seem aware of endometriosis.

One of the nurses Sam gave me antisickness through the IV and whilst she was slowly putting it through she was chatting to me about why I was in the hospital today and what had been happening the last few months, she really listened to what had been happening. Thank you Sam for your understanding. The department was busy but the nurses still came in to check on how I was doing. I was told to come back the next day for an ultrasound scan, I don't mind as I live close but felt it could have been done at the time I was in the hospital so that the doctor would have a better idea of what was going on. Overall the nursing staff were great and four hours later I was able to go home after some fluids, pain relief and antisickness as pain was more under control and the IV's helped. Thank you so much.

Thank you for this, I will pass this on to the nursing staff. We are very lucky to have a good team of skilled and caring nursing staff and it always makes me happy when that is recognised! I'm sorry if you felt the medical staff were a little unprepared regarding endometriosis - I have to say, it's not something we see that often - this can help direct our learning.

I'll try to ensure that the team have an increased awareness of the condition and management.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback. I hope you are feeling better.

Kind Regards

Claire

Thank you for your reply. It would be great if you could have someone talk about endometriosis who lives with it? I suppose it gives insight into what living with the condition is like.

The staff nurses were fab and the nurse practitioner on saturday (I wrote another story about that) was amazing really understanding and supportive at a very difficult time.

That's a really good idea. I was planning to try to see if I could ask one of the gynaecologists at the Royal to come over to speak about the various gynae conditions we may see here in acute medicine at the Western and would be good to have a patient reflecting on their experience directly. If you would be keen to be involved, please get in touch on Claire.gordon@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk but no pressure!

Thanks again. I've passed you other message onto Jenny, too.

Kind regards

Claire
