"Care of my elderly mother at Withybush General Hospital"

About: Withybush General Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My mother was 86 and went for a hip replacement. She came through the operation well and went on to the ward for post op care. There was an outbreak of norovirus, which she got and was put into a side room. So far so good.

I left her one evening absolutely fine but the next morning the nightmare began. I walked into an empty ward as all patients except my mum had gone because of the virus. The nurses were sitting around their station laughing and chatting which made me think they didn't have a lot to do.

My mother was slumped in a chair by her bed. I rushed over to her and she was obviously in a very bad way. I went straight to the nurses and said I thought my mother had had a stroke and was told no she was fine. They took no interest at all and carried on chatting. I went back to find my mothers urine bag was so brown she had to be severely dehydrated. She could no longer speak and seemed very confused.

She lived for 5 more years with severe dementia.

This is not the first bad experience I have had with this hospital.
