"Attending A&E with child"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Accident & emergency

(as a relative),

Attended forth valley hospital with my daughter and granddaughter who we suspected had swallowed something. Seen by a member of staff who's  name we found out later, as no introduction during triage, minimum questions asked, back to waiting room.

After several hours the baby was getting upset, I foolishly popped out to ask the extremely nice receptionist if it was going to be much longer, long story short, was then confronted by this same member of staff, who I still had no introduction from, in hall in full hearing of children waiting area, large waiting area and basically I felt they lectured me in a condescending and combative manner for daring to politely ask if we would be seen soon. As this staff member had apparently no idea who I was, and I could honestly have been a neighbour or family friend, I had to pause them until I managed to call my daughter, the actual next of kin out of the waiting room where the member of staff in their eagerness to lecture me had rather prematurely left her sitting. At no time did this person ask who I was, they just wily nily shared confidential information because I was there. Apart from this, service fine, definitely taking it higher though, how dare this member of staff presume around patients confidential data?

Dear Carrie16,

I am sorry to hear about your experience, this is not the service we aim to provide. I would like to apologise for this.

I would like to be able to speak to the member of staff concerned to allow them to reflect on this interaction.

if you would like to email me at Glynis.fotheringham@nhs.net with your granddaughters name I will be able to identify the member of staff and will discuss your concerns with them.

Dear carrie16,

I am sorry that your Grand daughter had a long wait during her recent visit to the Emergency Department. I am sorry if you were spoken to inappropriately. I am also concerned to hear that you feel confidentiality was breached.

I will be happy to look into all of this for you. I would be grateful if you could please contact me with more details.
