"Kidney stones"

About: Borders General Hospital / Accident & Emergency Borders General Hospital / General Surgery (Ward 7)

(as the patient),

I arrived at A&E and was treated with the utmost respect the staff were great. I stayed in the department until my pain was under control, I know I breached the 4 hours but that was due to my pain not to the staff not attending to me.  I was transferred up to ward 7 where I stayed for 2 days  having emergency surgery on a Saturday to have a stent put in situ. During my stay I was treated with the utmost respect. the staff never stop for their entire shift but never stop providing an excellent service.

Whilst I was in I must have been "stabbed" at least 30 times trying to get blood from me or put a venflon in place especially as I was dehydrated and requiring IV fluids. ( I have awful veins I am very aware of this and try my best to assist.) One nurse explained that because I had became septic that doesn't help the veins either. All of the staff tried their hardest to be as gentle as possible apart from one member of staff who I believe isn't in the right job.  This member of staff asked if they could take blood, had one attempt in my arm then moved down to the wrist when this was done I asked them to stop due to pain but I was ignored. I shouted stop and the response was I don't have time for this. I honestly believe when a patient says stop it becomes assault. I was left in tears but the staff again on shift were great including a senior staff member who managed to get blood. This one person spoilt all the good work everyone else done. I honestly wouldn't let them near me again.

Dear the pain of the stones,

Thank you for taking the time to feedback your experience. I am disappointed to hear of your experience with one particular member of staff - I have spoken to Elaine Dickson, Clinical Nurse Manager who would welcome the opportunity to discuss this further with you. I am pleased to hear of the good care you recieved outside of this.

Kind Regards

Katie

Dear "The Pain of the Stones",

Like Katie, I am sorry that a member of staff has caused you distress.

I will pass on your kind words to our ED Team regarding your time in their department.

Kind regards

Ed
