"Top of finger severed through bone and nail bed"

About: Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency Victoria Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Caught finger in check of door when closing. I felt nauseous but adrenaline kicked in and I held finger together, covered and but hand in a basin of ice then waited for my husband to take me to A&E.

Casualty receptionist Lindsay was my first point of contact. She was calm, reassuring and professional in her manner.

James and Zoe, the 2 nurses who dealt with me, were honest, professional and answered any of my concerns. The X-ray dept staff, were kind and also very professional. The doctor who spoke to me made me feel less confident of my situation as I didn’t feel confident with them or explanations.

Nurses in the day intervention unit were happy, helpful, comforting and very professional explaining in detail the procedure to follow and on my return from theatre and discharge. They also made me a fantastic cup of tea and hospital toast.

The surgical team were calm, reassuring and again very professional. I had questions written to ask them and they answered them no problem.

I was extremely happy with the surgery and the team in theatre. They were all great. I thought whilst in recovery a member of the team might come and speak to me as I did have questions to ask. This didn’t happen. I was told in theatre my nail bed had been sewn on, but because I was under sedation and shock I didn’t take I all in.

My overall experience is to praise the team of professional and highly skilled NHS staff and cannot thank them enough.

Dear Colcar,

Thank you for taking the time to describe your patient journey and experience following your injury, I hope you continue to make a good recovery.

Overall I am pleased this went well for you however, I did note there were two aspects of your care that you were less satisfied with.

If you would like to discuss this further, I would be happy to hear from you.

Regards Arlene

Dear Colcar

Thank-you for sharing your recent experience which included attendance at the Emergency department. I see overall the experience went well but note one comment where there may be an area that could be improved upon. If you feel you would like this looked into please get in touch with Arlene Sanderson and I will then look into it further.

regards

Dr Andrew Kinnon
