"I am reviewing again, and again terribly..."

About: Taunton Road Medical Centre

This is my 2nd and final review as I am changing surgeries. This time I had an unexpected situation with my 3 1/2 yo daughter. On Wednesday afternoon I had to run from nursery straight to the gp as my daughter was crying with a right sided 'tummy ache'.As any mum should know, that can be anything from a simple upset stomach to a appendicitis. Therefore, I got there in just 10 mins( all sweaty, worried and with nothing but my keys) to be greeted by an " experienced " receptionist who after listening to my trouble informed me that I must return home, call the surgery no.and make an appointment with a duty doctor who will decide if the patient needs to be seen on the day. Shocked as I was I asked her if she was making a bad joke. The answer was that "the practice does not offer a walk in service". I explained again to her again that because of the symptoms it could be anything to ,the worst case scenario, a ruptured appendix which is DEADLY if not treated as emergency and I asked her to judge for herself what was more reasonable: to call an ambulance on the basis of an untrained supposition or to simply verify in a matter of seconds (by a nurse) and then I would ask for a regular appointment to continue the medical investigations. As she simply continued repeating herself I told her clearly that I refuse to move from there until I talked with someone with a higher rank than her. I waited in that reception with my daughter in pain for approx 1 1/2hours until the reception manageress decided to show me some attention and began with the " sorry for the misunderstanding.... " My reply was " there is no misunderstanding...... "!!!! I had to retell the whole story and after waiting some more, I would say approx 2 hours she managed for my daughter to be seen by a doctor who confirmed that she had no inflamed appendix and suggested further investigations.I must make absolutely clear that the unprofessional way the receptionist on duty dealt with my case is unacceptable! I was left there for approx 1 1/2hours without knowing how long i had to wait for the reception manager or if my daughter would be actually checked by someone with some medical knowledge. And when she saw that I wasn't moving from there ( as I clearly said!) they twisted it by talking about misunderstandings....while my child was in pain!!!!!!!! I also explained that a" telephone assessment " for whether the patient qualifies for the emergency appointment is just unrealistic when we're talking about young patients who are not fully capable of expressing themselves and being at home with such a patient does nothing positive for their condition instead of being at least given a reassurance that your child will be seen (even briefly by a nurse) at the end of the nursery working hours. Of course,as expected, all fell on deaf ears! The letter i received today from the practice manager just confirms it!Nothing will change : "however I hope you understand now how the system works." SAD

I was very saddened to read your feedback.

I am sorry you feel that you have had a bad experience when you attended the surgery with your daughter.

Please do not hesitate to contact me, or the Practice Patient Liaison Manager, should you wish to discuss this further.
