"Looked after him as if he was their own"

About: Borders General Hospital / Acute Assessment Unit Margaret Kerr Unit

(as a relative),

My father in law was admitted to the Borders General becoming frailer with advanced cancer after very quickly being assessed in AAU it was apparent that his disease was progressing. The compassion and care shown to him, my mother in law and my husband by the medical and nursing staff was exemplary despite the extremely busy environment. The bed manager Jane very promptly had us all transferred to the Margaret Kerr Unit, for which we were so grateful.   It’s hard to find the right words to describe the care in the MKU. It became our home for the next few weeks.  The staff became like friends, nothing ever too much trouble. They took time to find out all about my Father in law and looked after him as if he was their own we will be ever in their debt. Knowing a loved one is safe and comfortable at the end of their journey is the wish of anyone with a terminal illness and in the hands of Annabel, Becky, Lisa, Heather, Paul, Kevin, Jenny, Susan and everyone else that was the case.  Working in the NHS isn’t easy and as a fellow employee it made me so proud of the BGH, thank you also for caring for me. The twiddlemuff that my father in law was given is now safe under his granddaughters pillow.

Thank you so much Grateful71 for your kind words about the time your father in law spent in AAU and MKU. We feel very priviledged to support patients and their families and part of that is to find out more about them all so we can ensure we look after them in the right way that is personal to them. Throughout the BGH there are many fanstatsic teams working hard to provide this care and as you say, sometimes it is not easy. However feedback of all sorts helps us to improve services and support our staff, so I will ensure they hear your kind words. The twiddlemuffs are made locally by creative stars in the community and have been really beneficial. It is lovely to think that his grandaughter has a special place for it now.
