"Disappointment"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Neonatal Unit (Special Care Baby Unit)

(as a relative),

My grandchild is in the Neonatal unit and while it's a difficult time for the family the care has been great. Unfortunately we don't live locally and had travelled up at the weekend to visit and offer my daughter and son in law some support. My son and his family came with us and at that point we didn't realise only siblings were allowed to visit so we had 2 disappointed cousins but totally understood the rules.

It wasn't until later when chatting with my daughter that she commented on the fact that a member of staff had brought their children into the room my grandchild was in!  My daughter felt uncomfortable saying anything at the time but it would have been a different story if I had still been present at this time.

Surely this is against protocol and highly inappropriate. Why is that staff are permitted to have their children not only in the ward but in the rooms where the babies are and is appears family are not?

Dear Disappointed Granny

Thank you for taking the time to feedback the above information. It is very disappointing to read and I will certainly feed your story back to staff as I do with all care opinion stories. Staff bringing their own children into the unit certainly is not the norm and I will reiterate this to all staff. I apologise for the upset that this has caused your family and I hope that the great care you mention has not been totally marred by the above event. I hope your grandchild is doing well and your daughter is recovering from the stressful time she has been through.

Kind regards

Thank you for your response! Perhaps the nurse wasn't aware of the rules although you would think it would be common sense, I do hope this filters to all staff permanent and temporary too.
