"I don't feel this was professional"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Cardiology

(as the patient),

I’ve struggled with palpitations, lightheaded ness, dizziness resulting in losing feelings in my limbs and either falling over or feeling of blacking out. I also get chest pains occasionally to accompany this. I received a 48hour tape and they found what I was talking about as well as short gaps between beats/skipped beat. However because I’ve had it so long they are happy with the results, and suggested is the other symptoms causing the heart problem and because I’m young and female it’s seemingly normal. I could accept all of this until the staff member said to me as another nurse was present in the hallway that maybe more regular exercise would help.  I responded that I work pretty much on my feet and the staff member replied that maybe I should consider more regular shifts. I said that I work 12 hour shifts 5 days a week and the staff member's response wasthat maybe that’s too much then.

I dont feel this was professional at all.

Dear RinaKaori

I would agree with you that your experience does not seem to match the high standards of care and professionalism that we consider to be our normal practice in Cardiology. Whilst we often advise patients to enjoy an active and healthy lifestyle, I would not expect specific advice to be offered in a hallway, especially as it sounds as though the conversation you had wasn't appropriate or helpful. I am very sorry about that.

I will share your comments with the staff in our investigations and outpatient departments but would be very happy to discuss the matter further with you. If you would like to speak to me please call my secretary Sharon Mason and I will get back to you (01324 566832). In the meantime I hope you feel better.

Once again, please accept my most sincere apologies for your experience.

Catherine
