I am writing this -as a retired pain specialist nurse who ran a UK-wide pioneering persistent pain charity. The patient I write for has low vision & reported her deep distress to me. She is still traumatised by her experience. She reported having an initial rectsl examination under sedation where the surgeon couldn’t locate a rectal polyp. She returned for a second attempt. This time she wasn’t sedated. The surgeon found two polyps which sere sent for biopsy. Almost a month ago and she still hasn’t heard a ything. Her major concern is that she said that she found the second exploratory rectal procedure brutally painful. She said that she was in tears and it still perturbs her. Both the indignity of being forced to endure VAS 10 + level pain with the surgeon and nurse seeming to blithely ignore her clear distress. I am appallled that this is still happening. My mother reported suffering extreme pain & distress over a similar unsedated sigmoidoscopy, over 25 years ago. Please bring this to the attention of the senior consultant in charge of the unit. She has given me the examining surgeon’s name. My concerned criticism is intended to be constructive not negative in the hope of ensuring a change in your pain re,ief procedures. Thank you. Rose Murphy - retired RGN
