"Appointment required with the Practice Nurse"

About: Pathfields Medical Group

My husband who is nearly 80 was seen today at Dermatology Outpatients Dept at Derriford and a small procedure on his leg took place . The Consultant said he should be seen by the Practice Nurse in a week. The receptionist who took my call today was polite but said he would be seen by a HCA and the only appointment was at Beaumont Road Surgery next Friday.

I appreciate that Pathfields now have many surgeries around Plymouth but I wasn't even asked if he could get there. We live in Plympton have been patients for 42 years and whilst i appreciate that things move on, having to get to St Judes for a dressing is not acceptable

Thanks for your feedback and apologies for the difficult situation with the dressing and suture removal.

We will always try and accommodate patient's needs for suture removal but offering this service is challenging.

It is actually the hospital's responsibility to review wounds and remove sutures but for many years primary care has taken this work on as a favour to the wider system and to help patients out.

Unfortunately no funding was moved to primary care to support this work and as GP budgets have become increasingly strained our ability to offer this service is equally becoming more challenging.

Please speak to the hospital if you have issues with getting sutures removed in primary care.
