I do not have enough good things to say about the entire RM Fulham Sarcoma team who have looked after me. I had a returning, rare, complicated liposarcoma. I needed 25 sessions of radiotherapy and a number of MRI and CT scans ahead of surgery. Every step of the way I felt safe, human and in the very best hands which was invaluable when going through such a scary experience.
The team are titans within their careers and still had the compassion and kindness to make sure I felt 'heard' as an individual and that both my family and I felt we could discuss my treatment and share any concerns.
My surgery was a success and I am very grateful to say that I am now 'cancer free'. I owe that ,and the retention of my sanity, to the whole team - the surgical and oncology consultants who were always honest and inclusive throughout the process - they talked about my treatment to me as an individual, not at me or down to me. The radiotherapists who were patient and so reassuringly thorough; the ward nurses who were incredibly caring and got me back on my feet; the anethesia team who compassionately dealt with my anxiety; the recovery nurse who was so incredibly kind when I felt my most vulnrable; the physiotherapists who are still helping me now;and the receptionist who's encouraging smiles went such a long way, especially in the early days.
People don't understand why I think I am "lucky"- but I am. Nobody chooses cancer, but if you do get it, being under the care of the Royal Marsden feels extremely 'lucky'. #OurWonderfulNHS
