My recent experience of Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit was extremely poor and I will be putting in a formal complaint to highlight all the problems. I recently had a miscarriage at 12 weeks- I feel very let down by the service offered, despite my history of previous miscarriage it took 4 days from when the bleeding started until I was eventually offered a scan. By the time I was scanned I had had extensive bleeding at home and needed admitting via ambulance to A and E. I do not feel it is acceptable to be left this long, particularly when someone has a history of previous miscarriage. I feel that the delay in scanning me took away my choice in how the miscarriage could be managed. The experience was very traumatic for myself and my husband- bleeding extensively at home and I feel if I had been seen sooner for a scan my care could have been better managed and this may have reduced the stress we experienced.
Early pregnancy assessment unit is only open in the mornings and I believe does not offer afternoon scans- I feel this needs looking at as the department clearly cannot cope and miscarriage does not just occur in the mornings. The medical management of me from early pregnancy assessment unit was very poor. I received no follow up other than being told to take a pregnancy test in two weeks.
Due to all the blood loss and being very anaemic,I had to access care from my GP two days from discharge from EPAU for bloods tests and iron tablets as nothing had been organised. I feel Early Pregnancy Assessment unit did not treat me with care or respect and needs to improve on its service offered to patients. Sadly this is my second bad experience of this unit, last occasion I did not give feedback but hope that by doing so this service can be looked at as it needs to be significantly improved.
