About: Derriford Hospital

What I liked

The Doctor who knew what was needed but was stopped by constant red tape and insufficient backup

What could be improved

more staff on duty all day every day even if it is the weekend or a bank holiday or after 5pm. how can one of the largest hospitals in the southwest have an after hours service?

Anything else?

my husband was admitted as an emergency from oncology on 16th dec to have a drain put in his lung as he was struggling to breathe, by the time it was decided exactly what was going to be done there was no-one available to do the procedure as it was after 5pm and also the weekend, 1 doctor for 5 wards and only 1 person for the whole hospital to perform ultrasound scans people get sick 24hours a day 365 days a year It was finally done on 20th 4 days later and he was allowed home on 24th after 8 days in total for something that is a relatively straightforward procedure that could have been done much sooner we were constantly being told that things were going to happen that that never did, also on whilst on the ward we discovered another patients notes on the end of his bed when my son pointed this out to staff it was dismissed as an unimportant error. On the 26th my husband collapsed and had to have an ambulance to A&E as he had contracted a vomiting bug whilst in hospital.Over the last 8 years my husband has had treatment for cancer at Derriford by the max-fax team which has always been excellent but sadly this last experience has been a truly dreadful one which is most upsetting for us his family as he now has 2 different cancers one that is incurable and this may well have been his last Christmas.Due to his experience he is fearful of any dngoing treatment and does not want to go on to that particular ward again
