"They simply don’t have enough staff to work efficiently"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Clinical assessment unit

(as a service user),

Waiting times at FVRH CAU are frankly appalling. The staff themselves are brilliant but there is only so much they can do. The unit simply doesn’t have enough staff/doctors to work efficiently. I was kept in overnight recently and it is a terrible place to send the night. It is noisy, the ambient light levels are too high and it is totally inappropriate for overnight. The washrooms are inadequate as after an overnight stay there is no facility for a shower or to wash properly.  There are no TVs or Radios to watch/listen so you end up being bored out of your skull!

This unit is designed for short term assessment but it seems like it is being used as a holding bay for patients that they don’t have beds for and to avoid patients backing up in A&E. The whole unit needs totally redesigned to increase the throughput-it is failing in service provision despite the commitment of the staff, but the system is broken and needs fixing.

Hi Stumpybear

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. I am pleased that you felt our staff were brilliant and I will be sure to share your feedback with them.

As a team we recognise that on occasion CAU is not used as it was intended and as a consequence does not meet the needs of our patients. Patient stories such as yours are quite powerful and can provide much needed momentum in delivering meaningful change. We are about to embark upon a 12 month improvement programme and hope to address many of the concerns you have raised.

I would be really interested in discussing your experience with you further with a view to developing a patient story which would support the need for change within the unit.

I hope you are recovering well.

I can be contacted on 01324 567085
