"Breast Cancer Unit is exemplary"

About: The Royal Marsden Hospital (London)

I came to the Marsden for a second opinion following my breast cancer diagnosis. The previous London-based hospital adopted a one-size-fits-all approach and the treatment plan felt like it wasn't customised for me, particularly as the consultation sessions lasted 10/15 minutes.

My experience at the Marsden has been completely different. From the initial meeting with the breast cancer surgeon and her team to the later meetings with the reconstruction team, I've been treated like an individual, with my own situation (they showed me the scans and talked me through the findings in detail) discussed fully to make sure I understood all the treatment options available and the consequences of opting for the low risk options (full mastectomy) versus the high risk (lumpectomy).

After each appointment I came out feeling fully equipped but also completely reassured that I was in the hands of experts and pioneers in the field.

The nurses have been absolutely brilliant, too – and always available.

Whilst the next few weeks/months are daunting, I feel confident in the teams taking care of me.
