"Lack of care on ward"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / General Surgery Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Gynaecology Services

(as the patient),

Had a gynaecological operation/procedure done a few weeks ago. I was in ward 308.

I experienced a lack of care and warmth from nursing staff.

The bedside manner of my consultant and ward doctor was lacking as though i was just another operation.

The staff down in theatre were good though - Caring, friendly and warm.

I was bleeding, in pain and didn't feel well after my operation. I needed the toilet and asked one of the nurses for assistance as i felt light headed. I was made to walk to the toilet with blood running down my legs. No pad and pants were looked out for me or offered. When on the toilet the nurse just threw a pack of wipes outside the toilet door and said, you might want to give yourself a clean. I struggled and eventually got cleaned up myself.

Got back to my bed just wanted to sleep. The nurse gave me all these tablets in a small plastic cup wasn't told what they were and they just walked off and left me to it.

I stayed the night in the ward and the next morning a nursing assistant threw some towels on my bed and said, you might want to take a shower and they just walked off. Again, no offer of any assistance considering i was still feeling weak and light headed.

I felt as though i was an inconvenience and couldn't wait to get home.

Hopefully my experience is not the norm.

Dear Bennachie 1

I am sorry to hear your recent stay in ward 308 was not as you would have expected, with lack of care and warmth from the nursing staff and lack of personalised bedside manner by the consultant and ward doctor.

I will share your feedback with the theatre staff who will be delighted to hear the care delivered was caring, friendly and ward.

I would be happy to meet with you to discuss your experience in ward 308. In the meantime I will discuss your feedback and how it made you feel with the staff on the ward with the aim to improve the experience of other patients in the ward.

Kind regards

Margaret Meredith
