"Accessing WestMARC services"

About: WestMARC (Lanarkshire) / Adult Wheelchair Clinic

(as a relative),

my husband, a double amputee who has suffered six strokes over the years has been using the WestMARC services for a while. He has used the prosthetic service in Glasgow and the wheelchair service in Motherwell.

Following his most recent stroke he was no longer able to propel his wheelchair as the left arm was affected. We called WestMARC to  arrange for a reassessment of his needs - the Glasgow office categorised him as 'borderline' ie that he did not need immediate reassessment, even given that he is a double amputee affected by a recent stroke. The Glasgow team said, with a rather dismissive approach that he would be reassessed in about six weeks.

Fortunately we then had a call from the Motherwell team with a cancellation so they would be able to see my husband more quickly. Their warm welcome was so refreshing.

The girls at Motherwell were brilliant. Their ability to relate to us, their people skills were excellent.  They showed a very good understanding of the impact of his stroke on  his restricted ability to manage his wheelchair. They carried out a very thorough assessment and promised him an electric chair in two weeks for which we are both very grateful.

Also, judging from the busy waiting room at Motherwell this is clearly a much needed service.

Dear victortg77,

Thank you very much for sharing your story on care opinion.

I am delighted to read that your experience at our Motherwell site was a positive and engaging one and that clinical and administrative team made you feel welcomed and supported. Please accept my apologies for any level of service that did meet our high expectations when it comes to Patient Centred care.

I would really be keen to review the care that you experienced to ensure that we capture any learning. I hope by having a fuller discussion that we are able to harness the experience you had at our Lanarkshire site and replicate it where we can.

Please feel free to contact me on 0141 201 2392 or 0141 201 2624 to discuss your story.

Heather McIntosh
