"Great staff , poor ambulance"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service

(as a relative),

On a recent trip in an ambulance with my relative, which was organised by the doctor, a brand new Ford ambulance arrived to take us to hospital.

En route we thought the suspension had collapsed or had seized, but to my surprise the paramedic informed us that this was normal. The paramedic was also of the opinion that in future the newer ambulances are being purchased as a buy two get one free, and that that the ambulances are just vans with no design input from the on road staff.

I know things are bad with money and budgets, but at least listen to staff for they know what is best for patient transportation.

I am responsible for the development and implementation of the Scottish Ambulance Service's communications strategy: this includes staff communications as well as external audiences, including PFPI and media management.

Thank you for your feedback about your relative’s experience of one of our new Ford ambulances.

Over the last three years Scottish Ambulance Service has invested over £25 million in a vehicle replacement programme, including some 4 x 4 capability to help us get to patients during adverse weather. The new vehicles were road-tested as part of the purchasing process, and we are continuing to gather feedback about the performance of our new ambulances through a nationwide programme of Patient Safety WalkRound visits to ambulance stations by the Service’s leadership team.

In addition to feedback from our staff, we have had other patient feedback about the suspension on the new vehices. I have shared the experience you had while accompanying your relative with our General manager for Fleet. He is monitoring the situation.
