"How is the care so different in each ward"

About: Borders General Hospital / General Medicine

(as a relative),

My dad was in ward 6 the care and patients of the staff was second to none even under a great deal of stress and pressure due to lack of staff they were even using staff from other wards, nothing was a bother to them, he was then moved to ward 4 talk about chalk and cheese dirty commode sitting while meals were getting served when asked if it could be moved was told when I get a minute! ! ! Surely this was a priority when patients are eating, dirty dressings left on, medication not given as couldn't find it, as certain nurses attitude was awful regardless of how busy they are there is no need to be ignorant and abrupt.

Dear Anne222,

Thank you for sharing you and your fathers experience of the care received in WD6 and WD4. It is sad and very concerning to hear that the standard of care in WD4 has fallen below what you had experienced in WD6 and from what you describe it is certainly below the standards of care that I would expect.

I will share your positive experience with the Staff in WD6 and will discuss the poor care you describe with the staff in WD4.

If you felt able to and thought it would help I would like to discuss the care you and your dad received in WD4 in more detail so that the staff in WD4 could learn from your experience.

My contact details are;

Thank you again for sharing your story

Dear Anne222,

Thank you for taking the time to tell us of your father's experience in the BGH. I am really delighted that his experience (and yours by extension) was good within Ward 6, where our nursing staff try incredibly hard in a fast paced, high intensity environment! I'm sorry that the experience was not matched in Ward 4, where our nurses are equally hard working but clearly exceptionally stretched at times. Like Jamie has suggested, it would be really helpful to hear more about this so that we can make changes to the way that we deliver care!

I think that Care Opinion is an incredibly valuable tool in allowing patients and their advocates to reach the people who are working on the floor and have the ability to make a difference according to the people who have experienced a service! As I have said above, I am really grateful to you for taking the time to tell us your dad's story, as although we would love everyone to receive amazing care all of the time, we recognise that this is not always the case and that change is continually required!

With best wishes,

Lynn

Dear Anne222

Thank you for taking the time to share the experience that you and your father have had as a result of his admission to BGH. Ward 6 is a very pressured environment and can be stressful for staff, but we strive to give the best possible care to every patient and it is good to hear how positive this was in your case. We can all learn from both commendations and concerns that are fed back to us, but I know that staff like to feel (and get confirmation) that they have done a good job for their patients so I will ensure this positive feedback is shared with them. Care Opinion is a very valuable platform for patients/relatives to share their experiences and can help us to identify what we do well and where we need to make adjustments as part of our continual strive for improvement and maintenance of standards of care.

Thank you again.

Best Wishes

Lynne
