I was referred to the cardiology department as I had atrial flutter, which was impacting quite seriously on my quality of life.
I saw a consultant reasonably quickly and had ablation explained to me in some detail along with the possible benefits and the risk involved.
I decided to undergo the procedure.
Within a month I was invited back for a pre-admission session.
The staff on Chesterman 2 did a great job in preparing me for the ablation.
Everything was explained and all my questions answered.
On returning home the same day I received a call giving me a time for my procedure about a week or so later.
On arrival, the ward staff were really helpful and supportive.
They kept me well advised of my likely time slot for the ablation.
Before I entered the room for the procedure, the consultant came to speak to me and quickly went through it with me again.
I was apprehensive, so found this very reassuring.
During the procedure I was kept informed about what was going to happen.
The team worked really well together.
The procedure took only about 50 minutes in my case and much of this was after the main work had been done, waiting to check my heart didn't go out of normal rhythm again.
The procedure was completely successful and I left the room with my heart in normal rhythm for the first time in nearly a year.
I am writing this on day 5 after the procedure.
My resting heart rate is fairly constant at between 60 and 65.
This is a great improvement.
I have even been able to do some walking at a much better pace than before I had it done and I am far less tired.
I cannot rate the staff highly enough.
The communication, advice and care have been superb and I am so grateful to the consultant and his team for the skills they employed to ensure a successful outcome for me.
"Excellent advice, care and treatment throughout"
