"Cardiac Rehabilitation Course"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Cardiology

(as the patient),

Recently I completed a Cardiac Rehabilitation Course following a Heart Attack earlier this year. Having received first class care in the Hospital, I was then invited to the 8 week Rehabilitation Course.  This course was higly effective and also very enjoyable. It was possible to build up my strength  week by week and progress to more involved exercises. I was amazed at just how positive an effect this had on my recovery. Many Thanks to the Cardiac Nurses and the Physiotherapists at Hairmyres Hospital. Their ever watchful eyes were on everything and they provided very useful information and advice.

2. Only problem was the fact that it was almost impossible to find a space in the Car Park. In the end I had to park in East Kilbride in the multi-story car park. Is there a way of making the Car Park for the exclusive use of Hospital Patients and Staff?

I am sorry you had difficulty finding a car parking space at Hairmyres.

NHS Lanarkshire recognise that car parking is a challenge for patients, visitors and staff alike at the moment. This is generally an issue across the three acute hospitals in Lanarkshire, but the Hairmyres site has the added pressure of being within a short walk of Hairmyres train station.

Please be assured that this is a pressing issue that we are doing our best to address but we are limited with regards to the “enforcement” action we can take as the hospital roads and car parks are not part of the public highway. This means we don’t have any statutory powers to enforce parking regulations. ISS Mediclean manage the car parks on behalf of NHS Lanarkshire and they have increased early morning monitoring in an attempt to deter commuters and their staff can apply adhesive notices to inappropriately parked vehicles; but that, regrettably, is the limit of our enforcement capability at present.

You may be aware that we have also started a media campaign in an effort to deter commuters from using the hospital car park.

We also urge members of the public and members of staff who are able, to consider using public transport to travel to the hospital if possible, or car share; but I appreciate this is dependent on accessibility, shift patterns and roles.

Whilst I am unable to guarantee any immediate improvement please be assured that the management team at Hairmyres Hospital will continue to make every effort to address the ongoing situation.

I hope that this is helpful to you and has addressed the concerns you raised.
