"Great care"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Plastic Surgery & Burns (wards 45, 47, 48 & 49)

(as the patient),

I was admitted to ward 49D for day surgery. The staff in the ward were friendly, cheery and helpful, from the porters, health care support workers (2 males but I can't remember names), staff nurses and charge nurse Julie catered for every need. In theatre the reception and recovery staff Janette (Jinty) and Margaret were great. My consultant Mr McGill and his registrar Richard were very professional and caring, and my anaesthetist Dorothy took me on a nice trip to the Maldives during my anaesthetic!

The only negative was that I was admitted at 08:30 having been told to fast from midnight and no fluids after 06:00, but I wasn't scheduled for theatre till the afternoon list, which didn't start till 13:30. Had I been made aware of this, I could have had light breakfast at 07:00 and fluids till 11:00. There was another lady on the list after me who was also told to fast and she didn't go down till nearly 15:00.

Despite this, I was back in the ward by 16:00 and was given the most amazing tea and toast and a full jug of iced water, before having dinner too! I left the hospital at 19:00 with details of all my follow up appointments.

Thank you to all involved in my care.

Dear EvelynV

I am delighted to read about the care you received at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. I hope you had a great time in the Maldives!!

I am sorry that you had to fast from midnight, even though you surgery wasn’t until the afternoon and I will raise this with the team.

I will pass on your lovely comments to the staff, who I am sure will appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback.

I hope that you are recovering well.

Best wishes

Nicole

Thank you for taking up the issue of fasting times. It did not have a particular impact on my recovery, but I know that longer fasting times can lead to dehydration and longer recovery times in some patients.
